When the original text changes

A translation of text that no longer exists is worse than none. You decide whether it is deleted or re-translated.

The walkthrough for this topic is being recorded. Until then, the text below covers everything.

The problem

Change a product description and the French version keeps describing the old product. Shopify only marks it as “outdated” — on the storefront it stays visible.

Your two options

Under Settings → AI instructions → Translations:

  • Delete translations on change (default: on) — the outdated translation is removed. The shop then shows the original text in that language until you translate again.
  • Re-translate automatically (Max plan) — the AI translates the new text into every published language, including ones that never had this field. This option replaces the deletion.

Changes outside the app, too

If you edit text in the Shopify admin, with another app or through an import, the app notices: for products and collections immediately through Shopify's notifications, for pages, articles, blogs and policies through a daily check. The translations are then handled according to your setting.

Automatic translations run as a background task. If you save a translation yourself in the meantime, your version wins.
